Self-sabotage is everybody’s favorite word that perfectly describes how we are always in our way. It is what stops us from pushing further and why we sometimes make the worse decisions, hell it will even add more to your self-doubt like a virus. It is what I think about when I look back on everything.
I am guilty of this. I always think of 100 different ways a scenario might go down, overanalyzing a simple situation that didn’t require that much brain power or even freezing on what I want to do next. It is wanting to reach out to friends or complete another task, only to never do it. It is exhausting and can get to unhealthy levels.
One of the best and most talked about solutions is “just doing it”; You’ve probably heard of this many times from Garyvee, valuetainment, writers, other creators, or entrepreneurs. Just doing it; is sometimes all it takes. But “just doing it” doesn’t mean blindly doing every single damn thing. It means doing what you specifically want to do that adds more to your growth.
Overthinking can cause you to stay in one place for too long, doesn’t matter whether it is trying to find a game to play from your backlog, finding something to eat, or taking the next opportunity to advance your career. Taking too long will make you feel more anxious and out of time, and realistically make you lose out on many things. Don’t be like me in that regard, be better and never lose your focus on what’s important whatever that may be.
The next aspect of self-sabotage is everyone’s favorite which is self-doubt. This can be fueled by many things, sometimes imposter syndrome, other times shame. I’m a jack-of-all-trades, and with my varied skillset and experience, I focus on one foundation. That foundation is digital marketing with a focus on branding.
My self-doubt comes in when I feel a project might be out of my reach due to my skill, and I worry about creating something lackluster even if people don’t expect me to be Mozart, a genius biz wiz, or what have you. I am trying to get over my self-doubt by looking back on all the work I have accomplished, seeing the results, and using that as a way for me to push forward. I also make sure to take on projects that I know I can do.
I want to give my best try at things, whether it is establishing and developing my creative agency, providing the best services to clients, building my brand, or even creating events. That is the keyword “trying” because that is all we can do.
Self-sabotage is a common experience. It is an experience that is hard to deal with at first. However, if we start acknowledging when we do and continue growing, we can make the steps to build the life we want. It will be hard work, but when has anything worthwhile have been easy?
It is a part of the human experience. An experience that we can all relate to. You are never alone, and that should give you comfort. Find people that will hold you accountable, and can contribute to your growth as a person. Self-sabotage can be a hell of a drug, but an intervention is always welcomed.
